Emergency Preparedness updated Mar 17, 2024
A few months ago we avoided a potentially disastrous Sun Spot event which could have wiped out many of the electrical systems via a Corona Mass Ejection. Luckily, the event happened on the side of the Sun that was facing away from the earth. From Google AI, The Carrington Event, the largest recorded geomagnetic storm, occurred in 1859, triggered by a powerful solar flare and coronal mass ejection, causing widespread auroral displays, telegraph disruptions, and sparking in telegraph stations.
Nowadays, we depend on terrestrial telecom infrastructure, satellites, and the Internet, along with smart (digitally managed and operated) power grids, all vulnerable to geomagnetic disruptions.
There is another event to consider and that would be an EMP, Electro Magnetic Pulse. This type of event would take out almost all cell systems, internet and many cars and appliances. However, unlikely it is something to consider.
The reason for this update is to recommend the following.
Make Several Print copies of your drivers license, credit cards, important phone number list, and other important documents you will need. It is important to have the copies individually laminated in case your wallet or purse gets stolen or lost. Keep these in a hidden compartment near the spare tire along with your emergency cash. If your not confortable with storing these in you car, have them buried with other important items outside your home or other trusted location.
It is a good idea to have spare keys to your home, car, and other items buried in a sealed container on your property or at a trusted location.
I will soon produce plans for building underground safes that are cheap and easy to get to shortly.
Continuing with my previous letter, I would like to address some
good practices recommended to emergency service workers
nationwide. So let us consider this scenario being a reasonable
possibility and you are 20 miles outside of town in your car
quits working and, of course, we must consider the possibility.
The cell phone may be offline. Cell phones rely on towers which,
if the microwave links are off by as much as two or three
degrees, the link will fail, making the tower in your cell phone
useless.
I have
seen drunk drivers taking out communication systems more than
once.
So as you
can see, there is a potential for a family disaster. What I am
going to present to you is a simple emergency supply kit that
you keep in the trunk of your car, allowing you sufficient
resources for a couple of days if necessary.
In case
you did not know, according to survivalist training, the body
can survive only three minutes without air, only three days
without water and up to three weeks without food.
These are
the same items I keep in my trunk and one of the issues that is
important to keep in mind is to keep water in a sealed one or
two 2 Liter clear plastic bottles inside your backpack so when
you do need it, it is nice and fresh. When you’re ready, pour
the water into the backpack bladder.
Following
is a list of items that you do well to having the trunk of your
car. Many items can be bought from Amazon and they are not too
expensive.
1. One to two hundred
dollars cash in ten and five dollar bills.
If the networks are
down, your credit card is useless.
2. Minium one liter
bottle of water per person.
3. Protein Energy Bars.
4. Peanuts preferably
dry roasted in a sealed container.
5. Handy wipes
5 First aid kit with
triple antibiotic cream.
6. Whistle
This unit
has a 3 L water bladder and has adjustable straps, not to
mention other attachments and compartments. Currently, it is on
sale for thirty-eight dollars.
Before I
go further, a glass breaking light and hammer in the front of
the car in case of flooding. Remember, the windows will not roll
down when flooded. The pressure of the water against the door
makes it impossible to open. Your only option is to break the
window with a hammer, not your feet. The following tool class
will be more than sufficient.
For the
backpack, a knife would be handy. Leatherman or Gerber type
multi tool would be a good choice. It gives you the ability to
make repairs and complete other tasks if needed.
LEATHERMAN, Bond Multitool, Stainless Steel EDC Tool with 420HC
Blade and Nylon Sheath - Amazon.com
So let
us look at some of the items that will add to this backpack.
A compact
First Aid Kit is a must.
Toilet
paper and a small shovel are a must.
In cold
or freezing weather, it is recommended to say with or in your
car. Have an extra cold weather sleeping bag available along
with blankets. If you leave your car, you can easily freeze
to death as you’ll be exposed to the elements. It is also
easier for search and rescue to find a car compared to a person.
In a cute movie, “New in town” she drove into a snow embankment,
so she made a flag out of her underwear and hung it on the
antenna in the blizzard, which was spotted by a passing driver.
A camp
stove $25.99 could be a lifesaver. I’ve used a similar design
and have been very happy with this design. The isobutane tanks
are available at many of the sport and outdoor stores, or you
can get them on Amazon.
Just
remember, it is not safe to use any heater inside the car.
If you do, make sure you open your car windows when using any
type of butane heater. If you do not open your windows, it is
very unlikely you’ll survive the night.
For the
16pcs kit with two cups, the price is $33.99
If you do
have to leave your car (Last resort) you’ll need a compass and
brightly colored ribbon. Remember, it is much easier and safer
to stay with your car. If you have to leave your car or
temporary shelter, it is extremely import to mark your trail
with ribbons tied to the trees or rocks within sight of each
previous ribbon. This could be every ¼ mile, or 200 feet, as you
travel. This is called bread-crumbing. So, if you had to return
to your car or shelter, your pathway is clear and makes it
easier for the Search and Rescue teams to find your car, or
shelter.
For
communications, part 94 of the FCC rules allows one to use any
method and/or equipment in the event of an emergency life,
death, and/or medical, where normal communications are down.
Having a two-meter ham walkie-talkie would be a wise choice.
For low
costs $30.00, and performance, the Quansheng
UV-K6 UV-K5(8) Walkie Talkie 5W Air band Radio Type C Charge UHF
VHF DTMF FM Dual Band Two Way Radio with NOAA Weather Alarm. Get
two of these, they are much more versatile than the GMRS only
radios.
This radio will work on both the Ham
frequencies and GMRS.
I also
have a Spot Satellite tracker and messenger.
There are
four types of messages. With the push of a
button, FocusPoint International, Inc. provides emergency rescue
coordination and monitoring through their dedicated search and
rescue coordination centers. - for example, contacting 9-1-1
responders in North America and 1-1-2 responders in Europe. The
SOS button is for emergencies only.
You can
set up a predefined message to your contacts to let them know
you’re ok, or need some help. Just so you know, if the cell
system is down, they will not receive your messages. So, you
want to have not only Cell Phone text number in your
notification list but also alternate email addresses. Your
contacts can also go to the Spot Messenger webpage to determine
your status and location.
Now for
some food. You would be surprised how much food and/or energy
bars you can stash in the spare tire compartment.
Jerky is
an excellent source. You want to have one 4 oz bag per day per
person. Figure on two to three days depending on the needs.
Fig bars,
energy bars, and nuts are excellent resources.
For quite
some time, many emergency coordinators have been looking at the
possibility of the Internet and/or cell towers becoming
unavailable. Many people do not know this, but I have many years
in emergency services as a district manager covering five cities
with over 100 volunteers. One of the many scenarios we trained
for in Southern California had to do with an earthquake, causing
all the cell towers and/or microwave stations to become out of
alignment, therefore becoming useless. This was well understood
by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and the Fire
Department, where I was certified in both.
This
means your cell phones will become useless. Internet Service
Providers, of which many rely on towers, will also be off line.
There is another interesting thing occurs when we have some kind
of disaster. Everybody picks up their cell phone and tries to
make a call. What many people do not realize is for every
thousand phones out there, the system only has between one
hundred and two hundred lines available. This is because of the
math they figured out that at the peak normal usage times, those
lines will be more than sufficient to handle the traffic.
Realistically, if you still have cell tower activity, those with
emergency authorization and/or member of FEMA will have first
access to the available phone lines and if you wait a little and
if your tower is still online, you are likely to have access to
phone lines too. Just so you know, this is all in the planning
manuals. I need to mention also that while you may able to
access the tower in your area, the ability to forward a call to
another tower or area may be severely limited.
As a ham
radio operator since nineteen eighty-five, there are many
advantages to having communication and not relying on the normal
infrastructure. For example, there is the Amateur Radio Packet
Service, which is pretty neat because each radio transmits not
only its location digitally but uses many repeaters and is
highly valued by search and rescue teams. So, as they are
looking for someone, each station will transmit its location as
the individual is talking to another member of the team;
managers can keep track of where everybody is. Not only that,
each member can see the location of their team members on the
net.
In many
areas, especially in mountainous areas, there will be radio
repeaters sitting on top of some mountain with backup power to
give you the ability to get your message outside your area. Not
only that, even the space station has a packet radio repeater up
there. Besides the space station, there are other amateur radio
satellites that are available to almost any ham radio operator.
While
driving on Pacific Coast Highway in Huntington Beach,
California, I was using a handheld radio tuned to the Catalina
Island repeater about 25 miles west of where I was. Little did I
know that the repeater operators had their second set of
antennas pointing towards one of the amateur radio satellites
where I end up talking to a fella in Perth Australia on a 3 Watt
walkie-talkie.
In an
emergency, one of the best communication guides would be the
most recent version
National Interoperability Field Operations Guide (NIFOG)
Version 2.01 March, 2022: Cybersecurity and Infrastructure
Security Agency - DHS Paperback – March 1, 2022
5x8 paperback - 190 Pages in color available on Amazon.
The Tech
License is easy to get. Don’t have to learn Morse-code like I
did. Anyone can get the GMRS license without testing. However,
the 462 MHz is more of a line of site and mountain bounce where
the Ham license is also open to world-wide and over-the-horizon
frequencies.
